Hi, I’m Angelica.

I’m a bilingual journalist based in Houston, and I have a passion for writing and reporting on underserved communities.

I believe approaching journalism with care and compassion creates impact and puts resources in front of those who need them the most.

I aim to engage with communities that traditionally have not seen themselves reflected in media.

About me

I’m a general assignment reporter on the Houston Landing’s education team, where I write daily features, explainers, breaking news and resource guides centered on education in Houston, specifically on Aldine and Houston ISDs.

I report closely on school closures, academic performance and new initiatives in Aldine ISD. Additionally, I support our dedicated Houston ISD reporter with breaking news while closely following evolving issues such as new programs implemented by the board of managers and other short-term enterprise stories.

Previously, I wrote explainers and guides to help Houstonians understand difficult topics or navigate complex systems as one of the Landing’s civic engagement reporters. These stories included topics such as how Houstonians could file police complaints, determine if a neighborhood is in a cancer cluster and understand the naturalization process.

I work closely with the audience team to connect with readers at flea markets and coffee shops and through Facebook, and videos.

In 2022, I graduated from UT Arlington with a journalism degree. While at UTA, I served as editor-in-chief of the student newspaper. I previously interned with The Dallas Morning News and KERA News.

Impact

My reporting on the district’s lack of communication ahead of the closures led leaders to arrange three community meetings and launch a website dedicated to informing families about the potential closures.

Ultimately, the meetings led to the district removing one of the seven schools slated for closure off of the list after receiving community feedback.
